TAIKOMON

Specific Topics WorkShops

Workshop 1: TaikOn Stage: presence through acting techniques.

What makes an artist stand out on stage? Why does the audience focus on one artist and not another? What captures our attention? Is it just what they call stage presence, or is there more to it? What do you want to convey or express on stage? Do you truly achieve it? Are all songs the same? What is the atmosphere of each piece? What if every taiko piece were treated as a different character within a story?

Workshop 2: “Oroshi: our vital Rhythm”.

Introduction to the philosophy behind Japanese percussion: “ki” and “ma.” “Ki” represents vital energy, spiritual and physical strength that is channeled through percussion. “Ma” is the space between sounds, the pause that allows the sounds to resonate and connect.

Workshop 3: “Kuchishouga: sing it and play it!”

Kuchishoga: sing the rhythm. Kakegoe: shouts and vocalizations used to accompany the rhythm of the percussion. Kata: specific body movements that accompany the drumming.

Workshop 4: “Kihon TaikoMon”

We have created a sequence of basic rhythms for all levels. Exercises to learn our basics in taiko, focusing on movement, voice, and transitions.
